Letter: Church street fraternities well served local community

As a resident of Roanoke Street in Blacksburg, I would like to thank the six fraternities who gave their time so generously to assist the neighborhood in its clean-up Sunday, Sept. 26. They picked up litter on Roanoke Street, cleared debris from the Price House Park area, helped residents get large items to the curbside on Lee Street and one fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, even repainted the Price House picket fence.

The participating Roanoke and Church Street fraternities were Zeta Psi, Lambda Chi Alpha,
Delta Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Alpha and Phi Gamma Delta. After the clean up, the gentlemen of these fraternities held an open house for area residents, something that had never happened before.

As someone who has lived in this area for more than 30 years, I can confidently state that these now nationally affiliated fraternities have matured well past the stage of simply being renegade social clubs and are becoming organizations of which the town and entire university community can be proud.
