Oldest UA fraternity to lose house in stadium expansion
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) The
oldest social fraternity at the University of Alabama will lose its
house to make way for a stadium project. The Delta Kappa Epsilon house
is in the way of a plaza that will connect Bryant-Denny Stadium to
University Boulevard.
University adviser John
McNeil says the university plans for the fraternity members to start
using a building across the street that now houses the university police
department.
The DKE (Deke) chapter at the
University of Alabama was founded in 1847.
It's not the first social
organization to have to move because of improvements to the football
stadium. Three sororities had their houses razed and had to build new
houses during the stadium expansion in 1998.
Fraternities and sororities
at Alabama own their own houses but lease the land from the university.
