After a weekend shoving match at 703
Walnut Ave., the address of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, a
group of people broke into the house and vandalized it, according to a
Syracuse police report and Steven Gaul, president of DKE.
At about 4 a.m., a male student had just left a party at DKE when he
received a call from his friend, a female student, who was at the party,
according to a report filed by the male student.
The female student asked the male student for a ride, and the call
quickly cut off, the report stated.
On the third attempt to call his friend back, a man from the party
answered, according to the report.
The man said he would bring the female student home in 25 minutes, but
the male student said he would meet the man in 10 minutes, and he drove
to the DKE house with two of his friends, the report stated.
The man who answered the phone began screaming at the male student at
the party and pushed him in an attempt to start a fight, the student
alleged in the report.
Gaul, a junior finance and accounting major, said this was false, and
that the student was asked repeatedly to leave the house at first.
"We wanted to avoid any situation that would turn physical,"
Gaul said.
When the man and the student were outside the party, a verbal argument
began and the two started to push each other, Gaul said.
In the police report, the student alleged that he stood motionless with
his arms at his sides as the man from the party struck him five to seven
times on the head and face.
The female student was also hit, the male student alleged in the report.
Gaul said, however, that no one was hit, and the fight was only a
shoving match.
"No punches were thrown, it was all pushing," Gaul said.
"We wouldn't stand for any of that."
Later, at about 5 a.m., Gaul said four people resembling the Syracuse
University students entered the house, damaged two computers and threw
paint around the house.
A fraternity brother who woke up during the incident said he identified
the male student as the person who broke in, Gaul said.
"DKE filed a police report at 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning," Gaul
said. "Until that report is published, DKE has no further comment
on the situation."
Later on Sunday, the male student alleged in the report that a group of
men came to Brewster Hall to confront him.
The student alleged in the report that one of the men told the male
student that the damages to the house were being handled, but he would
beat up the male student if he found out the student caused the damages.
Gaul said that DKE was not involved in this incident.
The female student reported the incident to Public Safety, but did not
want Syracuse police involved and did not want to proceed with judicial
action, the report stated.
The male student said he did not want to press charges against the man
from the party, according to the report.
